To immerse yourself in the Moroccan culture, we recommend you to visit the North of Morocco with its authentic and picturesque cities. Many of them have even appeared in series or movies, or have places that tell a legend.
But which are the most attractive cities in the North? Which ones have something unique worth traveling for? What can I do in each of them? If you want to know, keep reading this post.
Tangier, a journey into the past
Why a trip to the past? Tangier had a golden age in the 20th century, as it was an international protectorate. Tangier saw the best artists of the time such as Matisse and Paul Bowles . The craziest parties and the most elegant receptions were held there.
All this has left an indelible mark, not only on the people, but also on the buildings you can visit such as the Continental Hotel, the Café Paris or the Museum of the American Legation.
To see the cultural contrast of the city, visit also the jewels of its Muslim architecture such as the Kasbah, its mosque and its souk.
You can also enjoy nature excursions such as the Caves of Hercules or Cape Espartel.
Start with Tangier on your trip to Morocco with us, visiting all the cities we mention here from 375€.
Tetuán, the White Dove
Once you have seen the city of Tangier with its mix of Western and African culture, you will want to see a city with less tourism, where you can breathe the hospitality and warmth of the Arabs.
Then, we recommend a stop in Tetouan. It is called“the White Dove of Morocco“, because of the whiteness of its houses, and its historic medina is considered a World Heritage Site. It was also part of the protectorate in the 20th century.
Tetuan is a simple city, full of local people who come every day to the market, which you should visit. You should also see its small tannery, its Jewish quarter and the Spanish quarter.
Asilah, art and sea
If you like the beach, traditional crafts and art, you must visit Asilah. Yes, you may have already seen a Moroccan beach if you have visited Tangier, but nothing compared to the beaches and sights of Asilah.
Also called Arcila, it is a walled city and it must be said that it is beautiful, not only for its white houses with blue details, but also because it is decorated with beautiful murals.
Visit the viewpoint of Caraquia, its beaches, its wall and its medina, and take the opportunity to taste fresh fish in one of its many restaurants.
Chaouen, the Blue Pearl of Morocco
Yes, as the title says, Chaouen is a most photogenic blue city. Its white and blue walls attract painters, artists and photographers who want to immortalize it. They have already been the inspiration of Eugéne Delacroix and Maria Fortuny.
Let yourself be enchanted by its medina, getting lost in its colorful alleys. Visit the Kenitra square and its Grand Mosque, with its white minaret that stands out among the blue facades.
Don’t forget to go to El Hauta square, which is less crowded, but no less beautiful, as it overlooks the Rif Mountains.
If you forgot your jacket and you are a bit cold, or you want to take a typical souvenir of the area, buy a Chilabah. It is a hooded garment usually worn by the men of Chaouen.
As in all other cities in Morocco, you can also buy typical handicrafts such as leather bags, slippers, carpets, goldsmiths, jewelry, hand-painted pictures and much more.
