For hiking or trekking in Morocco, the ideal is to look for natural landscapes that make us feel like adventurers. One of them are the magnificent Todra Gorges in Tinghir.
The Todra Gorges are rock canyons in the High Atlas that divide the mountain into two impressive halves that make this place a tourist attraction. This natural monument divides the north and south of Morocco and is located at the entrance of the desert.
Parallel to it is the Dadès Gorge, on the western side, which you will also be able to see on your hiking route. In this post we will give you a guide on how to get to them and what you will find when you arrive.
How can I get to the Todra Gorges?
You can hire a tour to the Todra Gorges from Marrakech, or if you prefer, you can rent a rental car to reach the area on your own. Another option is to go by private cab.
Then, you just have to walk around and let yourself be amazed by them always with a local guide or with an application similar to Google Maps that works without internet.
Don’t worry if you don’t have a local guide in your car or don’t go with a tour, because you can hire a hiking route from there.
From which city do I leave to reach the Todra Gorges?
Note that Todra is very close to the city of Tinghir. As a reference, Ouarzarzate is the nearest city with an international airport.
But what if you are already in Morocco visiting other places? Then you can go from Marrakech, which is 350 kilometers from Tinghir. Or if you prefer from the city of Fez, 500 kilometers away.
You can access the Todra Gorges from the N10 road. If you go from Tinghir, signs will indicate the direction to follow to reach the gorges.
Don’t forget to visit the different viewpoints that you can find in the area.
Are there places to eat and sleep in the Todra Gorges?
Yes, although there is not much to choose from, in the village of Tinghir you can find some restaurants where you can eat typical Moroccan food for a few dirhams.
You can also stay in a campsite in the Todra Gorges, in a hostel that is quite close or in a hotel in the village.
For a small town there are plenty of accommodation options, so you are sure to find something you like. Although what we recommend is that you stay in a good riad for at least one night during your visit to Morocco.
What else can I do near the Todra Gorges?
That area of Morocco is famous because Laurence of Arabia and Star Wars were filmed there. One of the things to do is to look for the exact locations that appear in both movies.
In addition, there you can make the route of the thousand kasbahs. Visiting these typical Moroccan fortifications that often house museums, you can learn a lot about the history of Morocco and find the best views for a sunset.
If you prefer, you can visit the nomadic villages with small caves in which they live or the villages of mud huts typical of the areas near the desert.
Another highly recommended option is to visit the palm grove of Tinghir, on the outskirts of the village.
