Marrakech is considered by many to be the cultural capital of Morocco. It is also one of the imperial cities and has one of the most beautiful medinas, where you can find thousands of treasures to bargain for. Isn’t it exciting?
That’s why we recommend you to visit Marrakech, even if it’s only for a day, when you travel to Morocco. Undoubtedly, Marrakech is worth seeing, so we are going to tell you what you can do in Marrakech in one day.
Bab Agnaou
In the old days, every self-respecting city had gates, which were the only way to access them and were closed if the occasion required it.
Well, Marrakech has two, and one of them is Bab Agnau. Visiting it is a good way to start your itinerary through the city.
Bab Agnaou dates from the 12th century and has beautiful bas-reliefs sculpted in green. It was one of the entrances through which you could cross the wall.
It is also close to other attractions in Marrakech, such as the Saadian tombs.
Saadi tombs
These are tombs of real sultans, yes, but don’t expect to see ostentatious and elaborate tombs, as they are all very modest as an indication that at death all people are equal regardless of social or economic status.
Instead, delight in the rich architecture of the place, such as La Sala de Columnas, which is not to be missed.
The Bay Palace
If you like Moorish architecture and gardens, continue your route through the 19th century Bahia Palace.
It is one of the most impressive buildings in Marrakech. Apart from its gardens, we recommend that you see the harem, which was the part of the palace where the sultan’s concubines lived.
If you go to this palace beware of fake guides who will offer to accompany you to the palace entrance. We recommend that you go on your own and without haste, politely declining these guides.
You can also book one of our Marrakech tours to avoid such problems as our trip to the imperial cities from Casablanca from 540€.
Dar Si Said
Dar Si Said is another of the beautiful palaces of Marrakech, but in addition, this time, it houses a museum where you can delight yourself with works of craftsmanship at the same time with its rich walls and tiles.
You will be able to see works of goldsmithing, jewelry, carpentry, textiles, etc…
You can also learn about what daily life was like for the Moroccans, as it houses an exhibition of everyday objects and typical musical instruments.
Koutobia Mosque
This mosque is the main mosque in the city of Marrakech. You will not be able to see it inside, but just to observe its minaret, very similar to the Giralda of Seville, is worth it.
You should know that in most mosques in Morocco is not allowed entry to non-Muslims. But you can visit their gardens and take pictures outside.
Jamaa El Fnaa Square
We put it last because at night is when it is most alive. Many people go there at night to sing, dance, or dine at one of its many stalls.
They sell juices, dates, olives, meats and many other delicacies.
If you don’t want to dine there, there are good restaurants and cafes around it overlooking the square.
If you don’t like crowds, then visit at another time of the day, although it won’t have the same atmosphere. Also remember to avoid rip-offs by always eating at places with a menu and prices.
Finally, you can complete your visit to Marrakech with an evening stroll through the souk.
