The secrets of Morocco’s subway heritage: caves and grottoes

If you like the world of caving or want to feel like an adventurer on your trip to Morocco, let me tell you that there are several caves in the country that are worth enjoying.

Moroccan caves and grottoes are natural places away from the noise, which hide many secrets. Let us tell you some of them in this post and discover which are the best caves in Morocco and where they are located.

The Caves of Hercules in Tangier

If you are in Spain or you book our Morocco tour from Tangier to Fez, it is very easy to get there. It is only 20 minutes by car. You can rent a car or take a cab to get to the caves.

The Caves of Hercules have their own legend. It is said that Hercules went there to rest before fulfilling one of his jobs. This job was the twelfth, which consisted of stealing apples from the garden of the Hesperides.

Caves have been formed by the erosion of wind and ocean water. Their shape has also been influenced by man, who with his tools has extracted their precious stones.

Cuevas de Hercules

It is a cave that we know has had a human presence since the Neolithic period, due to the discovery of clay statuettes dating from 7,000 BC.

To visit them you will have to pay an entrance fee of approximately 60 dirhams and we advise you to go with a guide.

The Friouato cave in Taza

The Friouato Cave is located in the Tazzeka National Park, being the largest and deepest cave you can find in North Africa, which gives rise to some legends.

It is said that many of the explorers who entered its immensity have never returned. In fact, its full extent is still unknown. Only about 272 meters of its totality have been explored, but it is estimated that it may be as much as 3.5 kilometers.

Cueva de Friouato

For all these reasons It is essential that you go with an expert guide and that you are never separated from your group. L he complete visit is only for the bravest and most adventurous, as it includes sections that must be crossed while lying down or crouching. The visit can be adapted and only do a part of it if you wish.

In winter, it is best not to enter the cave because of possible snowfall and rock falls. We also recommend that you wear comfortable clothing and footwear with a good grip to avoid slipping.

Grotte de Chameau at Berkan

Soon it will be possible to visit these caves near Berkan. These caves are part of the Association of Moroccan Tourist Caves. For this reason, they are currently being conditioned and “musealized” and are temporarily closed to the public.

Grotte du Chameau 1

Keep an eye on all the news, because this cave has been declared a National Heritage Site and will initially have 354 meters of tour enabled for visits, although it has a total of more than 1,900 meters.

At the moment, you can enjoy the views of the mountain and the river, which the locals use for bathing. You can also visit its protected area with native flora and fauna.

Other caves in Morocco

Although there are other interesting caves in Morocco, they are not usually visited and are not conditioned for their visit, as the potential of cave tourism is just beginning to be discovered.

But, if you want to take a look at some of them, you can visit the caves of Oualidia or Khettara among many others.
