One of the advantages of traveling through the provinces of Cadiz and Malaga is that we can discover natural landscapes that will leave us amazed and will take us away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities. That is why we recommend visiting different villages and areas of the Sierra de Grazalema, which depending on the season of the year will offer us something different.
In the Natural Park of the Sierra de Grazalema you will also find some caves that you can see if you wish. In this post we will tell you what they are and where they are located.
Cave of the Two Doors
Although it is not a complete cave as such, it is a very curious geological formation in the form of an arch, from which we will have beautiful views of the town of Grazalema and its mountain environment.
It is also part of a hiking route that runs through the northern part of the Grazalema National Park. It is a route of medium difficulty that passes through the Sierra de Endrinal, the Hermitage of Calvario and several worthwhile viewpoints, such as the Mirador El Santo.
You can stay overnight at the campsite located at the beginning of this hiking route and even park there even if you are not going to stay overnight. If you prefer, you can book a hotel or hostel in the town of Grazalema. It is one of the most beautiful villages with white houses in Andalusia, so we recommend you to visit it if you have some free time.

Cat Cave
Actually, the Cueva del Gato is what we call a whole speleological system, the most important in Andalusia. The cave itself is called“Cueva del Hundidero“.
In any case, the Cueva del Gato is a dream place. From its southern mouth, the most famous of all, a waterfall flows into a river, the Guadares River. The waters of the river are of a beautiful crystalline color.
The cave and its wonderful surroundings are located in the village of Benaoján, 15 kilometers from Ronda. You should know that there are places to spend the night right there, in case you want to wake up with beautiful views.
In 2011 the so-called Cueva del Gato was declared a Natural Monument, although it had previously been declared a Site of Tourist Interest.
Picnic responsibly. In this environment it is forbidden to camp and make barbecues or campfires, and leave garbage, as it is a protected area. However, you can bathe in the spring if you wish. Of course, bathing is more appealing if you visit in spring or summer.
La Pileta Cave
There is another cave that you cannot miss near the village of Benaoján. It is National Heritage, not only for its geological value, but also for the presence of cave paintings inside.
The cave was discovered by José Bullón around 1905. José Bullón was a farmer with rented land. One day he saw bats coming out of the cave area and decided to follow them. Then he found the cave and saw its paintings.
Since then, many anthropologists and scientists from different parts of the world have visited the cave to study its paintings, which ultimately date back some 150,000 years.
A reservation is required to visit this cave. Visits are made in groups of about 25 people every day. Ask about their schedules before visiting.
