Seville is a city with many legends and secrets. Many of these places you can visit without any problems, although most people are not aware of the stories behind them. The truth is that a trip to Seville will never be complete if you don’t take a tour of enchanted Seville, where you will be told the most romantic and also the most horrifying stories.
That’s why, in this post we are going to make you a guide of the best places with ghosts in Seville that you can see.
The Faculty of Fine Arts
On Laraña Street is the famous Faculty of Fine Arts where paranormal events are constantly occurring.
Elevators that go up and down by themselves, macabre laughter, lockers that open and close, hairdryers that work without being plugged in… The ghosts of the faculty are not bored.
The truth is that there are several theories here: Some say that these events are due to the Pantheon of Illustrious Sevillians, which is located in the basement of the Faculty. There are many celebrities buried there such as Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer himself or Cecilia Bölh de Faber, who used the pseudonym Fernán Caballero. Many point out that she is the cause of many of these ghostly antics.
However, others believe it is Santiago, who was a fine arts model and later a maintenance employee of this building. Just the night he died “in strange circumstances” the ivies of the faculty were uprooted and noises were heard according to the cleaners.
The University of Seville opened paranormal investigations and made psychophonies in which the phrase “Go away from here” is heard.
You can visit the Faculty of Fine Arts and other places with a lot to hide in our Haunted Seville tour or the Paranormal Seville tour from 10€.
The Triana neighborhood and Castillo San Jorge
Why is Triana the Sevillian neighborhood with more ghost stories (apart from the center)? That has a logical explanation.
It happens to be the site of St. George’s Castle, which was the seat of the Inquisition since 1481. Today, you can visit its ruins and the Museum of the Inquisition it houses.
If you go to Triana, stop to contemplate the Callejón de la Inquisición. That corridor was what many prisoners saw just before dying at the stake. For that reason, they say that if you visit it at night, you can hear wailing and the sound of chains.
Others say they have seen a monk in a cassock and hood tormenting passers-by. The young man who saw him identified him as one of the monks who appears in the painting of“The Death of Torrigiano“.
But… it doesn’t end there. The Triana market also has its own ghosts. It is next to the castle of Castillo de San Jorge and was formerly a square: the Plaza del Altozano.
Market watchmen and many of the merchants claim to have seen a little girl dressed in white. Others say they have seen moving lights and heard children’s voices.
San Luis de los Franceses
Another neighborhood that is not spared from paranormal activity is the Macarena neighborhood, especially around the beautiful church of San Luis de los Franceses.
In recent years, this temple has undergone renovations and, although it is still an impressive and magnificent baroque church, it is also frightening.
The watchmen and workers themselves have stated that strange things happen there: furniture that changes position, tools that appear piled up, unexplained air currents, strange behavior in watchdogs….
Of course it is true, that in the crypt, which you can visit if you want, they found more than 300 corpses.
