Morocco is a country where many series and movies have been filmed, some of them very famous. It has very beautiful cities with labyrinthine medinas and also unique natural landscapes such as its deserts and palm oasis.
In this post we present you the most famous film sets so you can visit them with our tours. You can also make some popcorn and watch all the movies while you wait for the date of your big trip.
Ait Ben Hadou and the desert of Ouarzarzate
Ait Ben Hadou is the place in Morocco where more films have been shot. If you are a movie buff you should not miss this walled village.
Films such as Lawrence of Arabia, Jesus of Nazareth, Gladiator, Asterix vs. Cleopatra, Kingdom of Heaven, Babel, The Mummy, The Messenger, The English Patient, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, etc. were shot there. He even appeared in the third season of the Game of Thrones series.
The village has been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. When you are there you can visit the Atlas Film Studio, which was the first film studio in Morocco. Another activity you can do there is to ride a camel as if you were the protagonist of your favorite movie or see the markets and the Kasbah.
Do not complicate and make this trip to Marrakech and the desert including Ait Ben Hadou from only 250€.
Ouarzarzate has its own Cinema Museum, where you can see some sets and props from real movies as well as discover cinematic curiosities.
Some call this place Ouarzawood, because of all the movies that have been filmed there. The locals who lived through the filming are always delighted and very proud to tell you about their own experience and the famous actors they saw there.
Mount Atlas
Near Ait Ben Hadou, a part of the movie “Babel” and some scenes of the Netflix series “Alexandre:: The Making of a God” have been shot on Mount Atlas .
The truth is that it is a place full of natural landscapes where you can enjoy the Moroccan or Berber customs, which we have already talked about in other posts. It is also perfect for lovers of hiking and skydiving, so if you are an adventurous person, do not hesitate to visit it.
Tangier
Tangier has also served as a location for movies and series. Tangier was filmed there for “The Thief of Tangier”, “La vengeance dans la peau“, with Matt Damon and “Les temps qui changent“, with Gerand Depardieu. One of its houses was used to shoot a part of “Inception” (starring Brad Pitt), although the movie was set in Kenya.
Tangier is also where a large part of the Spanish series “El Tiempo entre Costuras” was filmed, inspired by the book by María Dueñas, which we recommend reading. Another city featured in the series is Tetouan.
Morocco, apart from being a perfect destination for lovers of the seventh art, is also a literary destination. Many writers have been inspired after taking a trip or living for a while in the country.
Was the movie “Casablanca” filmed in Casablanca?
No, it wasn’t. Most of “Casablanca” was shot in a studio. In Casablanca, in fact, part of the movie “Sex and the City 2” was filmed. Still, it is a very beautiful city worth visiting.
Marrakesh
It is a city of movies, as many consider it the cultural capital of Morocco. It is also where “Sex and the City 2” and part of “The Man Who Knew Too Much” were filmed.
