Rabat is the capital of Morocco and has good connections both by air and land. It is a destination that often goes unnoticed by tourists, but the truth is that it has many charms to discover.
That’s why in this post we are going to tell you what to see and do in Rabat in one day, so you don’t miss anything interesting.
What does Rabat offer you?
Rabat is one of the imperial cities of Morocco and is declared a World Heritage Site. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean , it offers beautiful sunsets in a city where tradition and modernity coexist. You will surely enjoy it.
You can travel to all the imperial cities at a reasonable price with our pack of imperial cities of Morocco with transfers included from only 650€.
The medina of Rabat
Start your day by visiting the medina of Rabat in the morning, after a hearty breakfast in a local café or at your accommodation.
In this busy area you will find food stalls, stores, artisans and charming alleys next to the city wall. It is one of the quietest medinas in Morocco and with fewer tourists. Its atmosphere is more local.
In the souk area you will find the Jemaa de Muley Sliman Mosque and the Jemaa Kebir Mosque.
The Martyrs’ Cemetery
If you wish, you can visit the cemetery next to the medina. The image of the silent tombs beside the ocean is striking and the visit will help you to better understand one of the aspects of Moroccan culture.
Cross it to reach the Rabat Lighthouse and the Rotemburg Fort.
The Kasbah of the Oudayas and the Blue Quarter
If you like castles do not miss the Kasbah of the Oudayas and its viewpoint overlooking the sea. You can enter the kasbah to take a look at its tiles.
We recommend that you visit it during the day or at sunset, to stroll through the blue quarter, one of the most picturesque of Rabat along with the Jewish quarter.
If you like the sea, you can also see the port of Rabat, where fishermen work day after day with their small boats.
La ville nouvelle or new city
This neighborhood, from the 20th century, has tall buildings and its streets are similar to those of European cities. There are the tallest buildings such as the Grande Poste.
You can take advantage of the visit to have lunch in one of its restaurants or to visit the Mohammed VI Museum of Contemporary Art and the Archaeological Museum.
Hassan Tower and Royal Mausoleum of Mohammed V
The Hassan Tower is an unfinished minaret that was to be part of the largest mosque in the world. However, work was canceled after the death of the sultan.
Even so, today we can see a beautiful minaret, very similar to the Giralda in Seville and the Koutobia Mosque in Marrakech. Their resemblance is due to the fact that they were created by the same architect.
You can also contemplate its 200 unfinished columns, which form a spectacular landscape.
In the same place you can find the Royal Mausoleum of Mohammed V. It is one of the jewels of Islamic architecture, so you can not miss it under any circumstances. You can enter the mausoleum area for free but not the mosque.
As you can see there is a lot to see in Rabat and there is still more, because this is only the essential. So, if you feel like it, you can spend more than one day in Rabat or come back on another of your trips to Morocco.
