Tetouan is a city that is called“The White Dove of Morocco“. It has one of the most beautiful medinas, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and it is also an authentic city without many tourists, where you can enjoy Moroccan culture in all its essence.
Tetouan is perfect to visit in one day and eat in one of its restaurants, so we are going to tell you what you can do in Tetouan and what you should see.
Stroll through the Medina
One of the best things to do in Tetouan is to visit the historic medina, where you are sure to find something you like. As always, we recommend that you go in the morning to enjoy it in all its splendor.
If you like beautiful views, climb to the highest part of the medina. This is the Kasbah area and there you will be able to see the landscape of the Rif Mountains. Near the Kasbah area you will find the cemetery of Tetouan, also with excellent views and perfect for taking some panoramic photos.
Another thing you can do is to go to the souks of the medina, where you will find craft stores where they sell and even make unique pieces that you can take home as souvenirs. For example, you can find fur stores, pottery shops, carpentry shops…
If you get hungry, you will also find artisan bakeries and pastry shops selling kesrah cookies or typical sweets with honey and nuts.
A curiosity is that the medina was largely built by Jews and Moors from Spain, after they were expelled from Castile in the 15th century.
You can see this Medina and many others with our trip to Northern Morocco from only 225€ or doing a longer trip with us if you prefer. We include an accompanying guide, transfers and full board in addition to other necessary things on your trip.
The tannery and its neighborhood
The visit to the tannery in Tetouan is very curious, because if you are lucky they will explain the traditional process they use to prepare the skins and dye them. It is true that the ones in Fez are much bigger, but if you haven’t seen them yet, you can start with the ones in Tetouan.
In addition, in the same neighborhood you will find the Mercado de Abastos and some handicraft stores selling jewelry, carpets, wood or wicker.
The Ensanche Espanol neighborhood and Hassan II Square
In this colonial-style neighborhood you will find emblematic buildings, stores and cafes, perfect for a little rest.
There you can find the Spanish Cinema and other places where the series“El Tiempo entre Costuras” was filmed.
Tetouan was the capital of the Spanish protectorate between 1913 and 1956. In the center of the Spanish Ensanche you will find the Moulay El Mehdi square, called Primo de Rivera square during the protectorate period. There you will find a Christian cathedral of neo-Mudejar style, which you can visit.
Near the Ensanche you will find the Hassan II Square, one of the liveliest places in Tetouan and where today is one of the Royal Palaces of the King of Morocco, formerly known as the Khalifa Palace and inhabited by the Sultan.
Feddan Park
Finally, you can not miss Feddan Park and the Bab Tut Gate. It is best to go at sunset to enjoy its beautiful views of the Medina. It is a replica of the old Plaza de España and is one of your must-see if you go to Tetouan, as many consider it the most beautiful place in Tetouan.
